NEXJ Healthcare Case Study

Since we did continuous delivery training, we have achieved measurable improvements to our software development process, and the team has experienced a positive cultural shift

- Andrew Borzenko, NexJ Health

NexJ is a compact technology company and web development platform provider, specialising in privacy-driven social platforms for the healthcare sector. Their work is supported by a focused team with a dedicated Quality Assurance (QA) department. Originally following a traditional development approach, NexJ sought to evolve its software development process into a mature, test-driven development (TDD) system. NexJ engaged CD.Training with the goal of transforming the team’s mindset towards TDD while working on their proprietary web development platform and unique UI framework. The challenges they faced included a decline in code quality, and a heavy reliance on manual testing processes. The team also experienced lengthy release cycles, limited automation, and fundamental differences in perspective between departments regarding the benefits of embracing continuous delivery (CD) practices. The CD.Training course “CD - Better Software Faster”, produced by Dave Farley, was accessed online by the entire Development and QA teams. Throughout the training programme, the teams participated in self-paced learning combined with regular group discussions, focusing on test- driven and behaviour-driven development (TDD & BDD) practices. A key priority was to systematically address the principles of continuous delivery and critically review their approach to testing. Following the training and subsequent implementation of these practices, NexJ reported measurable improvements in their software development process:
  • Quality score increased to a stable 96%
  • Significant reduction in the number of open bugs relative to completed tasks • Improved stability, maintaining consistent metrics over time
  • Release cycle reduced to a one-week cadence
  • Deployment time and test execution time decreased to under an hour
In addition to technical improvements, the team experienced a positive cultural shift. Initial resistance, particularly within the QA department, was overcome as the demonstrated benefits became evident. Developers also reported increased engagement in pair programming, improved code design through TDD, and an overall enhancement in work satisfaction. NexJ Healthcare’s transformation demonstrates that even small, focused teams can successfully adopt continuous delivery practices and achieve significant, measurable benefits. The combination of expert training, leadership support, and systematic implementation fostered a sustainable culture of quality and efficiency. This case underscores that investment in proper practices and infrastructure yields substantial returns in improved product quality, faster delivery, and enhanced team morale. Ultimately, this case study illustrates that continuous delivery extends beyond technical processes; it requires organisational commitment and cultural evolution. The credibility and structure provided by formal training were critical in overcoming internal resistance and embedding new, effective practices that might otherwise have been neglected or rejected.
